Social networking is dying

It was yesterday when we talked with Magdalena about Facebook, anonymity and breaking up with social networking in general.

In the past people were just switching from one social network to another when there was something new and cool coming up. Let’s say, a matter of a trend. The biggest “exodus” was probably the one when users were leaving MySpace in order to join Facebook.

What we are observing now is not just trying new stuff on the Web and dropping old tools because of lack of time or following friends who quit. It’s lack of interest. Social networking is not fun anymore. What is the primary cause of this process is trying to make business out of it. Or to use more appropriate term, monetizing. People just don’t want their private life to become part of someone’s business.

Facebook should have been sold when there was a good opportunity. And I don’t believe in any business model that could help here in the long run. Hopeless.
