Adobe has just announced its plans to "stop updating and distributing the Flash Player at the end of 2020" and encouraged web developers to migrate to HTML5-based technologies.

This goes in line with the general tendency of moving from proprietary "rich web" towards standard HTML5 technologies that deliver just as rich user experience without the burden associated with installing and maintainig web plugins from various vendors.

Note that this is not only about Flash: Microsoft has already announced end-of-life for Silverlight in 2021. To learn more about these fading proprietary technologies, please read this excellent StackOverflow blog article and JWPlayer has prepared a nice compability table showing which browsers are deprecating Flash and which do support the <video> tag (tl;dr: all of them).

WebCookies engine detects web plugins including Flash, QuickTime, Silverlight and Java applets, allowing website owners to identify potential starting points for the transition.
